After proper diagnosis of facet joint pain, radiofrequency may be used to provide more lasting pain relief. In this procedure a needle-like probe is positioned near the irritated nerve root. An electrode is inserted through the probe and the physician uses heat to cauterize the nerve. By discontinuing pain signals from the facet joint, pain relief may be for several month or possibly indefinitely. This procedure can be done at multiple levels in the spine at one time.
